Don't Hesitate - Weeds Won't Wait
PRESS RELEASE - 2002
Don't hesitate - weeds won't wait is the theme for the rapidly approaching National WeedBuster Week (October 8 - 15). This years theme sums up weed invasion well. Whether it is in our own lawns, our gardens or our local coastal and bushland vegetation - weeds invade and spread according to their own plan, at their own pace.
In the Coastal Environments around Pt Lonsdale and Queenscliff weeds are one of the biggest threats to the native vegetation. The many weed species already present along the coast are having a devastating impact on the diversity of our native species. This process may see the local extinction of some of our natives within in 30 years.
Once, growing in an area, weeds will continue to spread, driven by the natural biological urge to survive, at the peril of the local native vegetation. Failure to remove weeds at any stage of invasion will allow then to spread making the problems worse. It is sad that often by the time we get around to doing something, either in the garden or in local bushland the problem has grown and is bigger, more difficult and more expensive than anticipated.
The time to act is when you first find a weed. If you leave them so they can flower and seed you are compounding the problem. Most small weed infestations only take a minute or two to remove. Especially, if they are seedlings. So next time you are out walking and see a known weed or weed seedling, why not pull them out? You know, this simple act, which will take only a few seconds of your time, will help to save our local environment.
To promote weed awareness during WeedBuster Week the Swan Bay Integrated Catchment Management Committee (SBICMC) and are running the following activities:
A Weed Information Evening at the Marcus Hill Hall, Bellarine Highway on Tuesday 10th October 7:30 - 9:30 pm. Guest Speakers will talking on some common agricultural and environmental weed types and the Government's priority weed species in Geelong Area. If you have a plant that you think is a weed, bring it in and we will try to identify it and if possible provide a bit of advice on it's control. RSVP Ned Turcinov 52270398 by 6th Oct.
A "Coastal Weed Awareness Stall" outside "Eddie's on Main Street" 66 Hesse St. Queenscliff on Saturday 14th October 9:30 am - 12:30 pm. Local Coastal Weeds will be on display and information about them available. The stall is jointly organised by the Borough of Queenscliffe Environmental Advisory Committee and SBICMC.
